Ashes on Velvet — The Box With Her Mother’s Name

~~They called it a suicide, but Evelyn Rhodes called it a lie~~

Evelyn sneaks into the house of the supposed sender of the letter her mother received the day of her supposed suicide, dozens of boxes with an inch of dust on them sit on the semi-rotted hardwood floor.

With shaking hands, Evelyn sifts through the boxes, freezing when she sees one labeled “SIARRA RHODES.”

Mom, she thought to herself, recognizing the name instantly.

While opening the box, just then the doorknob turns with a creaking click.

Evelyn turns with a jolt toward the door as a man that shares her eyes appears in the doorway.

“I figured you’d come here eventually,” the man said without batting an eye.

“How do you know me?” Evelyn asks, her voice shaking slightly as she holds the box with her deceased mother’s name written on it in sharpie.

“Come now my dear, I know it’s been some time, but you haven’t forgotten your old man, have you?” The man smirks.

Evelyn’s eyes widen with fear and realization.

“You mean…you’re my father?” She gulps, dropping the box next to her.

The man laughs. A sound familiarized with joy, but the man’s voice was cold and devoid of emotion.

“Such a smart girl you are. I have missed you. Your mom had it coming…she was keeping you from me, I couldn’t let it happen.”

Evelyn’s stomach churned.

“Had it coming?” Evelyn asked shakily, not entirely sure if she wants the answer or not.

Could this be the answer to the question about her mothers untimely death, or is it just another dead end that’ll lead to nothing but pain and heartache.

This is a snippet of a bigger WIP called Ashes on Velvet. I love this scene because it adds a plot twist along with a heart wrenching turn of events.
